For interior walls, satin-finish and eggshell-finish paints are two good options. Satin-finish paint is scuff-resistant and has a subtle sheen, making it durable and easy to clean. However, this glossiness can also highlight imperfections like divots and patched areas.

In contrast, eggshell-finish paint has a rougher, lower-gloss surface due to its coarse pigment particles. This matte finish is better at disguising medium- to low-traffic wall imperfections compared to the more reflective satin-finish paint. While not as durable, eggshell paint is a suitable choice for areas that don't require frequent cleaning.

Primer is generally recommended before painting, as it helps the paint adhere better to the surface. However, a primer may not be necessary in all cases. If the surface has already been painted and the existing paint is in good condition, you can often skip the primer step. Some paints are also self-priming, eliminating the need for a separate primer product.

Certain situations do require the use of a primer, though. For example, if you're painting over an oil-based paint with a water-based latex paint, you'll need to use a primer first, as the latex won't properly adhere to the oil-based surface. Primers are also recommended when painting over stained surfaces, unfinished wood, or when going from a dark color to a light color, as the primer helps provide an even base for the new paint.

When selecting paint for outdoor surfaces, several factors should be considered. The local climate and the material being painted are key determinants. For optimal performance, it's essential to use a paint specifically formulated for exterior applications. Acrylic paints are well-suited for areas with temperature variations, as they can expand and contract without compromising durability. Latex paint is another viable option, as it dries quickly and also exhibits the necessary flexibility to withstand fluctuating temperatures. Both acrylic and latex outdoor paints are highly durable, making them reliable choices for protecting exterior surfaces.
